Nell Irvin Painter

Nell Irvin Painter is the Edwards professor of American history, emerita, at Princeton University, where she directed the Program in African American Studies. She has served as president of the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association, and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is the author of numerous books, including The History of White People, Standing at Armageddon: A Grassroots History of the Progressive Era, and Creating Black Americans.
