According to TVLine, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed that the network told Deadwood creator David Milch that he could begin work on a feature film. “David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” Lombardo told TVLine. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be—and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.” Milch and HBO have had a long relationship—aside from Deadwood, HBO has also aired the Milch shows John from Cincinnati and Horsetown: The Killing Fields. Deadwood was canceled by HBO after three seasons.
An exact date seems far off, however. Milch is currently working on another project. IMDB offers no hints as to what this mysterious project is, however, which means that it is most likely in its early stages. It could be years before we hear Al Swearingen anachronistically call someone a “cocksucker” for buying him the wrong pomade.
One thing we can expect, whenever the movie comes out, is a heroic use of the word “fuck.” The average Deadwood episode contained 87.5 uses of the word “fuck” per 55-minute episode, which means that a two-hour Deadwood movie would contain roughly 183 “fucks.”
