The world's two most important financial dailies--The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times--each ran editorials about the resolutions on Darfur passed unanimously by the Security Council. The unanimity is a dead giveaway: the resolution is a dud. Another piece of evidence that this is the case is that Sudan itself endorsed it. This is one of those U.N. triumphs. It gets everyone to agree on consensus wording and that guarantees that nothing happens. In this case, the Darfur genocide will go on...and on. The headline on the FT editorial was a surprise, suggesting that Pearson's flagship had really caught on to what was going on in Darfur. It read "U.N. troops are not enough." Breathtaking, no? So what did the editors of the FT mean? "The UN and its most powerful member states need to seize back the initiative from actors and rock stars, and focus their attention on fixing Darfur within the wider context of Sudan. To do this will need a top negotiating team, a single process to transform the politics of Sudan, and the promise for Khartoum as well as rebels that there will be benefits in peace, carrots as well as sticks." A little bit of ingenuity and some good will. A consensus usually disguises rifts which no one can breach. But it delays the reckoning. Note: Sudan is not a nation or a nation-state. It will not survive, and certainly not peaceably. The integrity of such states is nonsense. You can't solve anything unless you grasp the essentials. The Wall Street Journal headlined its editorial "Spectators to Genocide." It enumerates several of the most toxic verbal potions conjured up by China and Russia. Imagine if the U.S. had vetoed this resolution. Horrors at first. But, then, it would have revealed the truth. In the meantime, 63 members of Knesset (a majority) from across the political spectrum urged the government not to deport Sudanese refugees who reach Israel. This is a decisive initiative, begun by students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ben Gurion University in Beersheba. It has now won the support of figures on the right (including Bibi Netanyahu) and the left. Read the article in Ha'aretz. More people will be saved by such rescues than by the false steps of the U.N.
