Trump’s support in the liberal, liberal state of Massachusetts has been puzzling people for days. But it actually does make sense.
John Kasich and Marco Rubio both made gestures towards Massachusetts Republicans, but the problem is that the “Massachusetts Republican” hardly exists. Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one. In January, 20,000 people left the Democratic Party, many of them joining the ranks of the “unenrolled.” In February, Massachusetts counted 2.3 million unenrolled voters, a figure that dwarfs the state’s 468,295 registered Republicans.
Helping to drive what could be a record turnout, those unenrolled voters were Trump’s main source of support.
