Rock hit the lack of diversity at this year’s Academy Awards hard right out of the gate—the entirety of his monologue was all about #OscarsSoWhite. It was a fantastic monologue, and Rock walked a tricky line. He simultaneously defended the Oscars—arguing that boycotting the ceremony is futile—and lambasted Hollywood for its long history of racism. There was plenty of, “Yes we’re all good liberals who agree there’s a problem” material that went over well, but Rock also hit the fact that Hollywood is just as racist as the rest of America over and over again, in ways that made the audience extremely uncomfortable. Jokes like this, about why there weren’t #OscarsSoWhite protests in the 1960s: “We were too busy being raped and lynched to worry about who won best cinematographer.” It was the best—and certainly most memorable—monologue I can remember.
